REMARKS TO THE COUNTY COMMISSION

My name is Henry Berry and I reside in the first Civil District of Benton County.

Tonight, I rise to voice my concern regarding the desire of the Budget committee to eliminate the present budget law.

Nine years ago the present Chair of the Budget committee was the ringleader that successfully removed the balance of power from the budget process. This was accomplished by removing the requirement to rotate members of the budget committee. Which begs the question, why is this important issue of wanting to adopt a new budget law not on the agenda?

We are not paying a late bill; we are not in jeopardy of losing grant money. We are not even late in responding to a state or federal mandate. So what’s the rush?!

If the truth be known, many of you who will be asked to vote tonight have not even read the general law covered under T.C.A. 5-9-101 thru 407.

Also, how will this law really impact the people of Benton County? One thing is for sure folks; this action will affect how every tax dollar is allocated.

Mr. Mayor, why have you not held a news conference on this question? Commissioner Steinbuck, what’s your hurry?
